Matka Silk

Collection: Matka Silk

Know abt… MATKA SILKS

Matka silk is a coarse, handloom fabric produced using waste mulberry silk. It's recognized for its unique texture and somewhat irregular weave.

How it's made

* The silk is extracted from broken cocoons or remnants of fibers of hatched cocoons.

* The filaments are unwound and plied together on a mud pot, referred to as matka in the local dialect.

* The yarns are used to produce the fabric.

Texture:

* Matka silk feels coarse to touch and has an earthy raw beauty.

* Its irregular weaving, which many like to tweed, differentiates it from other fabrics.

* Its roughness is not a defect but a reflection of the creativity and craftsmanship of classic Indian weavers.

* Matka silk is chiefly sourced from Karnataka and Kashmir states.

* It also comes from the eastern region of India and more so in the states of Bihar and West Bengal
